Public scrutiny and the threat of government regulation are leading to a decline in industry-sponsored funding of accredited continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. This decline represents an opportunity to make CME more relevant, cost-effective and less open to bias.

Public Medical Communication

University of California, Irvine, Distinguished Visiting Professor: January 31, 2012

Dr. Aronson coined the term “Public Medical Communication,” which defines an area of expertise in medicine focused on clear and compelling communication with the public about health and health care. Public medical communication appears in perspectives, narrative or creative arts sections of medical journals but serves an even more important role when it reaches a non-medical audience through articles in newspapers and magazines, postings on websites and blogs, commentary by television doctors, and books for the lay public. Dr. Aronson is developing this field through writings, creation of innovative curricula, and talks such as this one.
